Historical Photography
How would we know about certain things that have happened in history without some very important photos? You could say we can still read about it, but what about the more visual learners, such as myself and many others I know? We can scan through our history books and find many pictures of events from the past. Without photography, we might not have known what the holocaust looked like, or World War I. Even events as recent as September 11th, that is already a big part of history. The point I am getting at is very simple. History wouldn't be anything without the use of photography.
Every history major you ask would agree that the reason they feel the need to study history is the fact that they want to try to prevent bad things from happening again. Take the Holocaust for example. Without those sad, devastating pictures, we wouldn't really get the exact feel of what people went through. Just searching the word on Google, hundreds of pictures of Jews being tortured and killed pop up. Students could use this pictures to gain knowledge and learn what life what like back then.
Another big reason photos are good for in history is learning what our past presidents looked like, or how life was like being certain things were invented. Think about Dr. Martin Luther King's speech about having a dream. They also have audios and videos, but without photography, we wouldn't understand how things were before and during that speech. So believe it or not, it is very hard to imagine history without the pictures involved, and honestly, it wouldn't be the same.
